INTERNATIONAL HISTORY
Building a Legacy of Leadership and Service
The International Furnishings and Design Association (IFDA) originated from a lunch meeting in New York City on April 22, 1947, where six women in the curtain and drapery industry, led by Claire Coleman, discussed their limited influence in the field. The group quickly expanded, forming committees to establish goals, draft a constitution, and plan a membership drive. By January 1949, membership had grown to 237, with additional chapters forming across the U.S.

Initially named the National Home Fashions League, the organization aimed to enhance women's role in the industry, facilitate the exchange of ideas, and provide professional development opportunities. Key programs included Home Fashions Time, Career Day, and scholarships. In 1986, men were allowed as full members, and in 1988, the association was renamed the International Furnishings and Design Association. Today, IFDA has 16 chapters and is a leading organization in the industry, supporting education and innovation in home furnishings and design.
